Losses among the civilian population in Ukraine as of 8:00 on March 16

As of 8:00 a.m. on March 16, 2022, 79 civilians, including 3 children, had been killed and 10 wounded in the last 24 hours of the Russian invasion.

In total, during the 20 days of the war, the Russian army fired more than 900 missiles into Ukraine.  For comparison, in the 5 years of the war in Syria, 100 missiles were fired.

Children:

As of the morning of March 15, according to the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, 97 Ukrainian children had died.  About 100 were injured.  About 5 children die every day.  Most children die in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Chernihiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Kherson and Zhytomyr.

Since the beginning of the conflict, 400 educational institutions have been damaged, among them 59 (schools, kindergartens) have been completely destroyed.  Air and artillery shelling destroyed 11 children’s hospitals and 3 rehabilitation centers.

Journalists: Russian military killed 2 journalists – 1 foreign and 1 Ukrainian (March 14)

Gorenko (Kyiv Oblast) – Russian military cameraman Fora News cameraman Pierre Zakszewski (Irish citizen) and Ukrainian journalist Oleksandra Kuvshinova were shot dead.

Another foreign journalist who worked with Brent Reno, an American journalist (“TIME”) killed by the Russian military on March 14, was reported injured.

Mariupol:

The Russian military has seized a regional intensive care hospital in Mariupol and is holding 400 civilians hostage, including doctors, nurses and patients.  The Russian occupiers are using the hospital and its civilians as human shields.

In general, the humanitarian situation in Mariupol is critical.  Constant shelling destroys and severely injures people.  Local doctors have almost no resources and opportunities to provide proper medical care to the wounded, people are dying from injuries.  Doctors in Mariupol asked for help in freeing the city from the Russian blockade and shelling. 

Mariupol – a Russian tank shot a defenseless elderly man who asked not to kill him. 

In addition, the Russian occupiers blocked buses in Berdyansk intended for the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol who do not have their own vehicles, including citizens of Turkey and Greece.

Captives and kidnapped locals:

On March 15, Vitaliy Shevchenko, a local public activist and organizer of pro-Ukrainian rallies in the city, was abducted in Berdyansk, Zaporizhia Oblast.  His fate is unknown.

Losses of civilians in different cities of Ukraine:

Zolochiv (Kharkiv region) – 5 civilians were killed as a result of artillery shelling of residential buildings.

Dergachi (Kharkiv region) – 1 person was injured as a result of shelling of residential neighborhoods.

Kharkiv region – 10 civilians were killed, including 1 child.

Slobozhanske (Kharkiv region) – as a result of air strikes by Russian aircraft killed 7 civilians, including 2 children.  The shells hit residential buildings and a school.

Kyiv – 5 people died as a result of airstrikes destroyed a building.

Velyka Dymerka (Kyiv region) – 3 local residents were killed during a rocket attack on industrial premises.

Gostomel (Kyiv region) – Ukrainian public activist Serhiy Mashovets, who accompanied an American film crew, was killed along with American journalist Brent Reno.

Yurivka (Zhytomyr region) – as a result of air strikes 6 private houses were destroyed, 1 person was killed and 2 were injured.

Rubizhne (Luhansk region) – Russian artillery shelling hit the building of the children’s boarding school for the visually impaired “Kryshtalyk”, the city hospital and destroyed three schools.  As a result, 4 people died.

Vugledar (Donetsk region) – 2 civilians were killed by artillery shelling.

Verkhnotoretske (Donetsk region) – 2 civilians were killed.

Avdiivka (Donetsk region) – 2 civilians were injured

Oleksandropil (Donetsk region) – 1 civilian was injured.

Mokhnatyn (Chernihiv region) – Russian military shot dead 3 civilians – 17 years, 17 years and 19 years.

Dnipro (Dnipropetrovsk region) – 1 person was injured as a result of airstrikes at the international airport.

Odesa region – the Russian army carried out air strikes, as well as shelling of warships, as a result of which 2 civilians were wounded.

Rivne (Rivne region) – the number of victims of airstrikes at the airport in Rivne region on March 14 increased from 9 to 20 dead.

Melitopol (Zaporizhzhya region) – An 18-year-old boy died after being wounded in the shelling of the city on February 28.

Polohy (Zaporizhzhya region) – as a result of shelling by the Russian army killed 20 civilians.  The information is being verified.
