Losses among the civilian population in Ukraine as of 8:00 on March 18

As of 8:00 am on March 18, 2022, 104 civilians were killed in the last 24 hours as a result of the Russian invasion (excluding victims in Mariupol, Volnovakha, Trostyanets, Izyum, partly in Luhansk region), including 5 children, and 47 were injured, including 1 child.  Captured 3 civilians.

Among the dead was a US citizen who lived in Chernihiv.

According to Human Rights Watch, Ukraine’s heavy civilian casualties are due to the use of a wide range of weapons by Russian troops, including cluster munitions repeatedly, as well as Hurricane and Tornado missiles.  At present, Human Rights Watch has all the relevant evidence that Russia has used such weapons.

Children:

As of March 17, Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine’s population had killed 108 children and wounded more than 120, according to the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.

More than 10 civilians were detained and taken prisoner:

On March 17, 2022, Volodymyr Tyurin, Deputy Head of the Civil-Military Administration in the city of Shchastya (Luhansk Region), was taken prisoner.  His fate is currently unknown.

On March 17, 2022, the mayor of the Velykoburluk community (Kharkiv region), Viktor Tereshchenko, was taken prisoner.

The day before, several people were taken prisoner:

 • Mayor of Dniprorudny Yevhen Matveev;

 • Chairman of the Melitopol District Council Serhiy Priyma;

 • Head of the Ivankiv District Administration Tetiana Svyridenko;

 • Secretary of the Skadovsk City Council Yuri Palyukh;

 • rescuer of the State Emergency Service Oleksiy Danchenko;

 • volunteer – paramedic Yulia Payevska.

Losses of civilians in different cities of Ukraine:

Kyiv – Air strikes killed 3 civilians, including Kyiv Theater actress Oksana Shvets.

New Petrovtsi (Kyiv region) – Russian troops fired on houses.  1 child (4 years old) died, 4 people were injured.

Sitnyaki (Kyiv region) – 1 person was injured.

Lychanka (Kyiv region) – 1 person died as a result of artillery shelling.

Sumy region – as a result of shelling of residential buildings in the suburbs of Sumy killed 1 woman, during the shelling of a private car by the Russian military killed 1 person.

Bezdryk (Sumy region) – as a result of shelling by Russian military convoys of cars moving between settlements, 1 child died, the number of wounded is being clarified.

Chernihiv – a Russian air strike on a dormitory killed 5 people – a family, including 2 adults (parents) and 3 children (twins 3 years old and a boy 12 years old. Killed 1 US citizen who could not and did not want to leave his seriously ill wife  The name of American citizen James Whitney, who wrote a lot about the Russian war against Ukraine on his Facebook page.

Official information about the victims in Chernihiv on March 16 also became known.  As a result of massive shelling of the city, 53 civilians were killed.

Rubizhne (Luhansk region) – 5 civilians were killed and 10 wounded as a result of heavy artillery shelling of residential buildings.  The information is incomplete.

Severodonetsk (Luhansk region) – 2 people died and 2 were injured as a result of shelling of a residential area.  The information is being clarified.

Zolochiv (Kharkiv region) – one woman died, she covered her own daughter with her body from the shelling.  The child survived but was injured, the child’s father was also injured.

Merefa (Harukiv Oblast) – 23 people were killed and 26 wounded in artillery shelling by Russian troops.  The school and the local house of culture were completely destroyed.

Kozacha Lopan (Kharkiv region) – the Russian military fired banned cluster bombs, killing 6 civilians.  The information is being clarified.

Pokrovsk (Donetsk region) – as a result of shelling of the city from the system “Hail” 2 civilians were wounded.
